Q. What is a credit union?

A.  A credit union is a cooperative financial institution owned and controlled by the people who use its services.  These people are members.  Credit unions serve groups that share something in common, such as where they work, live or go to church.  Credit unions are not-for-profit, and exist to provide a safe, convenient place for members to save money at get loans at reasonable rates.

Q. What makes a credit union different from a bank or savings and loan?

A. Like credit unions, these financial institutions accept deposits and make loans, but unlike credit unions, banks or savings and loans are in business to make a profit.  They are owned and controlled by groups of stockholders whose purpose includes earning a healthy return on their investment.  In a credit union, the return on investments is given to the members in the form of dividends.

Q. What requirements are there to join the credit union and how can I join?

A. If you are a member of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, Holy Spirit, St. Joseph, St. Mary or St. Stephen Byzantine Catholic Church, or you are an immediate family member of a parish member, you have met the basic membership requirement.  A person becomes a member upon approval of an application for membership, and subscription of at least one share.  In other words, if you qualify for membership, complete an application form and  deposit $5 into a savings account, you've joined the credit union.

Q. What do I need to bring with me with I join?

A. Our credit union complies with the USA Patriot Act of 2001.  We must identify and verify all new customers to the credit union.  We will need your legal name, date of birth, address, identification number (U.S. Tax payer number such as social security number, individual taxpayer identification number or employer identification number) and an acceptable form of id.  We will then perform customer identity verification through documentary methods to determine that the information is complete and accurate.
